Heroes of the Grid - What is it?

Lets get the main question out of the way. This is a board and miniature game where you work with a team and work to save the world, also you are a Power Ranger.

So when you get the base game you have enough things to play as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

You get all of this in the box, plus other items needed to play the game, tokens and decks.

  • 5 playable Rangers

  • 2 Foot Soldiers

  • 1 Boss

  • 4 Monsters

  • 5 Zord Cards

  • 1 Megazord

  • 4 Locations

  • 1 Command Center

Each of the Rangers have a 10 card deck which is their attacks and their life. Foot Soldiers have a deployment deck and a combat deck. Same goes for the Monsters and Boss.

There was also a Kickstarter release. This had 3 levels but I will list what the company, Renegade Games sells on their site.

My entire Collection, minus the Dice Tower cause I didn’t have enough room on my table for the picture.

The next videos are from the company’s YouTube

This next one is how to play via Geek & Sundry

This are the type of cards a player will use. The Top card is the Rangers Character Card. Bottom 2 cards are examples of cards in their deck.

This are the type of cards a player will use. The Top card is the Rangers Character Card. Bottom 2 cards are examples of cards in their deck.

Now we have this list created lets name off who you get to play as or maybe I will save that for a follow up post.

Lets talk about gameplay. First off the deployment The Foot Soldiers have locations to match a Location. So you pick either the Location or Foot Soldier. Then you get 4 Locations and that is the game board. Then you pick the Command Center, each has different benefits. The Rangers start off in the Command Center at the start of the game. I am not going to go into depth about how to setup but watch the last video on the setup rules.

Ok lets walk through the first turn of the game. There is 2 phases, Deployment then Action.

Deployment Phase is where the enemies attack various locations, Foot Soldiers, Monster, or Boss. You reveal 5 enemy deployment cards. I tend to move 5 to the right of the deck, do not stack on top of each other and leave them face down. Then start with the far right card and flip it over face up, I do one card at a time. Now place the figure(s), depending on how many are on the card, to the location to the left of the face up card.

For Example lets use Putty and Super Putty Foot Soldiers.

Draw 5 cards and move them to the right, the first card should be to the furthest most right. Flip it face up. It is a Super Putty Patroller, there is 2 on the card. Now we look to the left and see the Location, back of the next card to the left, and it says Angle Grove High. Place the 2 Super Putty Patroller Figures in that Location. That is how you do deployment, there is some other rules like max number of enemies in one Location at a time. This depends on each Location.

Once the Deployment Phase is over now the Rangers move and it becomes the Action Phase. There are 3 Actions you can take.

  • Move - Move to a Location of your choice

  • Battle - Start a Battle in the Location you are in, take Lead Ranger Token.

  • Recover - Recover 6 Shields, Defense Icons at the Bottom of the cards, and 1 Energy.

Once you start the game you draw up to 5 cards, out of your 10 card deck. The deck is your life and attack. The cards have a lot of information on them.

  • Top Left Corner - Cost to play the Card

  • Middle Text - States if the Card is a Maneuver, Reaction, or Attack. Then shows text about what to do when resolving the card.

    • Maneuver - A Card to buff or benefit the Rangers, makes your turn end in Battle after use.

    • Reaction - Can be used when it’s the Enemies Turn or Rangers Turn.

    • Attack - This is what it sounds, usually shows a number of Dice to role

  • Bottom Right - Defense for Attacks. Shield Icons are used when an Enemy attacks.

    • When an Enemy attacks you draw cards from your deck.

      • If your Shields equal the attack number the card is put back at the bottom of the deck

      • If your Shields are less then it goes to the discard pile

  • If your run out of Cards and are attacked again you lose a life, those are determined by how many players you have, and you move back to the Command Center.

Once the Rangers decide what their actions are, they all move to a location or locations then you can do a second one, Attack.

The way the Battles work is simple. It only takes one Action to start a Battle, and each Ranger in the Location joins the Battle. This helps with Action economy.

Now for the steps of Battle.

  • Place Energy Tokens on the Power Board, comes with the base game.

  • Each Ranger may draw up to 5 cards if they don’t have them.

  • Draw Enemy Battle Cards, this is a different deck from their deployment cards.

    • The number of cards, I believe, is a Max of 4 per battle

    • When drawing the cards place the first one down, then draw the second one and move all cards to the right.

      • Unless the first card has the word “Fast” These card stay to the left, if you draw a “Fast” card then it goes to the left of the previous “Fast” card.

    • If you have a Monster or Boss then do the same thing, 4 Cards only.

  • Now we figure out who goes first. If there is no “Fast” cards on the enemy cards then the Rangers go first

    • After whoever goes first it switches to the opposite. For Example if an enemy card had “Fast” then the enemies go first. Then the Rangers go second, and you go back and forth until all enemies have gone.

      • Only catch is if there is a Monster or Boss. They go before Foot Soldiers.

      • Once a enemy card goes you “Tap” the card, rotate the card sideways.

    Ranger Turns

  • One card can be played for the entire team in battle.

    • If you have a Maneuver card then that is the teams card for a turn.

      • Some of these let other Rangers play cards right after so you can still Attack some times.

      • This also applies to Reactions, sometimes they let you play them after a Maneuver or an Attack. Other times they have to be played on the enemies turn

    • Once you attack, if the enemy cards have life left then you put damage tokens on the card, life is in the Top Left of the enemy cards.

If you defeat an Enemy take the Figure off the Location and place them on the Power Board.

  • Once you defeat 6 enemies you receive a Zord card. These have different effects that can be used once per turn.

    • A Turn is once all Action Tokens are flipped over and used.

    • Once you get to Power Level 6 you will get a Megazord, you must get 5 Zords first to form the Megazord.

  • Once you defeat 4 Monster Cards you get a Zord.

  • Once you Defeat 6 Boss Cards you win the game.

The game is really fun and I will have to make a list of all of the cards in each pack, in a different post. So you can get an idea who you are going to fight against and play as.
