What is my initial thoughts on Star Wars Squadrons?

Hey everyone here is another blog about my time with Star Wars: Squadrons on PC. I am happy with the game but I am a little upset with how the upgrade system works. I am also able to play it just fine, but if you don’t have a team to play with you will get destroyed. But do please finish reading my blog and let me know on Social Media what you think.

So this is a flight game where you get to be a Rebel Hero and/or a Savior of the Empire. Depending on what side you like more. I am really happy with this game in general, this game has a lot to offer for being $20 cheaper than a normal game. This game has 3 different modes to play.

They are as follows:

  • Story

  • Dogfight

  • Fleet Battles

The story mode takes you through the story of two rival squadrons. One for the Empire and one for the New Republic. The story mode also teaches you how to do some of the more advanced skills needed for multiplayer. I only played like 3 missions so far and you switch back and forth between the two factions.

This is Vanguard Squadron for the New Republic.

This is Titan Squadron for the Empire.

Dogfight is the mode most players will be playing I think. This is a 5v5 team deathmatch. You can freely switch between the different ships each time you die. Each ship has different items you can use to customize your ships to change its performance. I will go into that later in the blog. You play this until hit level 5 then Fleet Battles unlock.

Fleet Battles has 2 different versions. The first one is against AI. You can play it solo with AI or with 4 other players vs AI. Then you have the main mode where it's 5v5. This mode consists of multiple phases.  First phase is a dogfight once you get the momentum you get to move to fight against 2 AI smaller Capital Ships. This part is where you take out the resupply points for the enemy team. Once those ships are down you go attack the main Capital Ship. Each Capital Ship has subsystems that need to be taken out, this helps to cause damage to the ship. This doesn't just go one way, it moves back and forth so you have to know when to retreat and defend or go and press the attack. Once you destroy the other teams Capital Ship you win and the match is over. The AI version is a good way to get used to playing this mode its not something you can just jump into and win. You need teamwork and practice on knowing what type of ship to pick.

Types of Ships:

  1. X-Wing/Tie Fighter

  2. Y-Wing/Tie Bomber

  3. A-Wing/Tie Interceptor

  4. U-Wing/Tie Reaper

Each of these are different classes. The classes are about being a dogfighter, a bomber, interceptor, or a support ship. I like to fly the Bombers and Fighters. The Bombers can be anti fighter or an actual bomber to take down the Capital Ships.

Here is a Gallery of each ship type.

The other thing you have is the equipment for each ship and those are very very questionable to me.  The way the ship's loadouts work are not Star Wars to me. Only things that really come to mind are the Proton Torps, Proton Bombs, and Astromech Repair. The other stuff is just mines, other kinds of missiles, and turrets. I think the ships can be customizable but it needs to have a base function for each one. All ships should have only one main weapon and not have it so you can have more than one type. Then each ship is able to link the weapon into duel fire, split it up into single fire, or link it into quad fire, if you have the quad cannons on your ship. The sub weapons should not be just a trigger to press and fire but a trigger and you have to lock on after activating it, or have to fire with that weapon until you turn it off. These kinds of weapons are Turrets for the Y-Wing, or Ion Cannons on the main ships like the X-Wing. These would replace your main weapon fire. I am not doing justice to what I am trying to say, I do enjoy what they have in the game but I am also annoyed because I am a big fan of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

I really do like this game, it's just the upgrade system being the factor in battles instead of the skill level of the player, and how small the battles are even when they try to make it feel bigger. I think if this game gets patched over the next couple of months it will end up being better. The thing I am worried about is how it's not getting any extra content after launch, like how Battlefront 2 got. This game is a blast and if you want to see the story action make sure to go check out my playlist here.
